On Friday, Canadian and American Muslim Leaders produced a religious edict, or fatwa, which clearly states any attack on Canada or the United States, is tantamount to an attack on the 10 million Muslims living in North America. The 20 imams who signed the fatwa come from Texas, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario.
Imam Syed Soharwardy of Calgary, Alberta and founder of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada said an assault on the U.S. or Canada is the same thing as attacking Muslims. “We are part of this society,” he said.
“This is my home… and if anybody attacks Canada, in fact, they attack my home.
The edict states, “These attacks are evil and Islam requires Muslims to stand up against this evil.”
“Muslims in Canada and the U.S. have a duty to protect both countries. They must expose any person, Muslim or non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians or Americans,” declared the group of 20 imams on the council.
The council went on to say, “It is religious obligation put upon Muslims, based upon the teachings of the Quran, that we be loyal to the country where we live.”
Imam Nasir Qadri of the Anwar Musallah Mosque in Montreal and fellow council member said he spoke to his followers at his mosque about the issue Friday. Most feel threatened by the attacks and call Canada their one and only home.
The fatwa comes after the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a U.S. jet bound for Detroit from Amsterdam by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. The 23-year-old Nigerian born man has been charged with attempting to use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder.

It’s good to see the Muslim community stand up against these bastards who make life hard for Mulsims everyhwere. That fact it’s a voice that comes from North America does not surprise me. The problem, however, is the relative silence of Arab Muslim World Leaders. This where the highest condemnation needs to come from, but rarely does. Cowards, all of them.
It sickens me to have to hear and see these ignorant self-absorbed idiots claim “Jihad” for their own insanity. Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somlia, and more all have radical elemants that make Muslims look bad the world over. We need more of what is mentioned in this story. Now more than ever.
The article should really be called “Canadian Muslims Unite” As the provinces mentioned cover the country from east to west and each can hold several American states. These provinces account for most of Canada’s population as well. One State? And Texas no less?? At least the cowboys have good hearts!
As much as their is a part of me that thinks they’re are just a few too many radicals in the Middle East, even more than they would like to admit, the larger part of me feels bad for those Muslims who come to North America to make a new life, only to have these radical Muslims make them feel like suspects in their own home. What so many Muslims long to escape in fact follows them each and every time these wackos pull the trigger. Its a shame.
The kind of message in this article is to be commended, but much more is needed, at least in America. The paranoia runs deep.
Certainly we could have come up with a few more reps than only Texas? It makes me wonder why the Canadian Muslim Community can come up with representatives for millions and American Muslims can only represent one state?
John – although I am speaking in general terms, to answer your question, American Muslims are more afraid than Canadian Muslims. The politcal nature of the American beast is part of the national pysche and effects all those who live within it. Just listen to garbage that many, even people in the so-called media and mainstream news organizations, spew about Obama. That explains it all.
